Umuibe, a sleeping rural habitation in Igboland, was jolted by a day of puzzling events when the unthinkable took place there. Pa Simon, an old retired headmaster, runs into a crippled boy in whom he develops an interest. He quickly becomes the lad's friend, benefactor, teacher and miraculous rescuer. But Ayakata, he soon discovers, is his grandson.

As it is said in popular parlance, 'wonders shall never cease!' Ayakata, the market square crippled beggar with a mouth skewed to one side, his legs gnarled and twisted, suddenly straightens out after a prayer session conducted by Pa Simon, the patriarch. Atudo, the half-clothed mad woman at Nkwo Umuibe, is Ayakata's mother who had abandoned him years ago after the mysterious disappearance of her bizarre husband.

This is the story of a modern miracle in a village in Eastern Nigeria.
