‘Death and dying was all around me, like yesterday’s dream that did not die at dawn.’

West Africa, Nigeria: 1993
After the annulment of a long awaited election to transfer power from decades of brutal military rule, barricades are all over the major streets of south-western Nigeria.
The presumed winner of a presidential election is jailed and the results are annulled. A divided military, under a brutal and murderous dictator, seizes power over a corrupt and inept political class.
The polity is unsure of how to move forward, and the officer corps, uncertain of how to govern with an increasingly disgruntled rank and file, is afraid of counter-revolutionaries, and sets up checkpoints all over.
A fearful, leaderless and unarmed citizenry, unsure of how to protest, gradually overcome their frustration, gain confidence and protest military rule by setting up roadblocks, paralysing the nation.
The author, a medical doctor, caught up in the swirl of protest, found himself at these barricades erected daily, surrounded by a motley group of citizens of all persuasions, risking their lives. Death and dying was all around, like yesterday’s dream that did not die at dawn.
The setting is real, the characters “are fictitious but represent unknown Nigerians who died at these barricades in the quest for democracy and freedom.
This story is dedicated to them.”
